Czar chasm

50-70000 people showed up in Washington DC Saturday to protest...something. Everything! A few snippets:

The remarkable thing here, is that there is very little of this which has been taken out of context. It's easy to make people look stupid via editing, but the interviewer was really only asking them why they were so upset about the things that their signs claimed that they were upset about. Again, I'm not really wild about the debt and deficit being where they are, but when the economy is where it is, this is the only recourse. You don't have to be happy about it, but it'd be nice if you could veer close enough to reality for a moment to at least acknowledge a couple of things:

Barack Obama isn't responsible for cratering the economy.

Things would be a damn sight worse if the stimulus bill had not passed.

Thus, here we are in a very strange moment, where we have the chance to make some real improvements in the way this country operates, and there are people, even those who would benefit, who are opposed to it because televised multi-millionaires have told them they ought to be. I will not go so far as to refer to them as "oligarhs."

Oligarchs, maybe. Plutocrats? Definitely.

I try very hard to see issues and events from all sides, because I have no use for political parties, and no ideology has a lock on good answers or common sense. So, I watch these events, and I wait for the moment where someone says something that makes me think, "Okay, I can agree with you in principle on some of that." But there's just so much WHARRGARBL, that it's nearly impossible to latch on to something that doesn't make you feel lobotomized.

Honestly, I'm to the point anymore where I'm halfway in your corner if you can just say what's bugging you without screaming or starting to cry. The right has turned into the left, all emotion and no brains, just angry, scared, and making everything about everything all the time, which is a classic liberal mistake.

For example, the anti-war protests. You're against the war? Great, march make signs, show the colors. But when the left turns out, PETA shows up, NORML is there, Greenpeace blows in, looking to roll severely obese marchers back into the nearest body of water.

But the right has guzzled down that particular gallon of left-wing stupid. These people who showed up in DC Saturday were angry about health care, that Obama is African, that we have officials called Czars, higher taxes, that Obama is a Muslim, ACORN, the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, to support Joe Wilson, a civilian corps of volunteers to do work in the US, the new combo philosophy of Communist Fascism, that Jesus isn't president, Barney Frank, to take the country back, mandatory abortions for all females over 11, that the country has been mostly destroyed, that "Barack Obama" means "anti-christ" in Hebrew, and just dozens of other really sensible, well-thought out reasons to be upset without needing to admit that the president is colored and that ain't America.

I know that this isn't all about racism, there are legitimate political and philosophical reasons to dislike what the president is doing. But most of this is about racism.

A Thousand Dollars

I was at McDonalds earlier today, because I was in the mood for crap. I like crap sometimes, and with that being said, I ordered a Minty Mudd Bath shake. It was delicious, although the color more resembled phlegm than anything else.

As I was ordering, I heard two impressively loud belches from behind me in the seating area. Now, to no one's surprise, I am amused by bodily noises, although more so in the privacy of my home than where others are eating. So, I turn around to look at the guy, and I just wanted to cry.

I get my cup of sputum, and go sit down. The belching guy is still there, although now he is talking in an unnaturally loud voice to his dining companions, one of whom appeared to be a friend, and the other his classy lady. The few chunks of witticism that I understand are bellowed in full white trash-speak, and I am unable to tear my eyes from this man's face. I would guess he was between twenty and twenty-five. He was fully un-self aware. I did a quick estimate of his IQ at 85, tops.

Don't think that this is a simple case of intellectual snobbery on my part. The average IQ of human beings is 100, and by default, half of the people in the world have an IQ less of than that. One out of every two people you see every day is below average. It's not a judgment, only statistics.

After the party had finished its post-meal conversation, belching guy and his girlfriend displayed no uncertain affection for one another, and the urge to weep overcame me once again.

These two are going to reproduce.

I am not a wealthy man, let's be clear about that. But I was honestly very close to walking over to their table and making the following offer:

"I would like you to join me at an attorney's office on Monday. We will draw up a contract which all parties will sign, to the effect that if neither one of you has any children in the next five years, I will at the end of that period pay you one thousand dollars."

I could save a thousand dollars in five years, I'm pretty sure, and I think maybe other people might even contribute to my new cause. But a grand isn't that much money, really, so I thought maybe ten thousand might be better, not that I could afford it.

But what about the government?

We are tested all the time in schools, graded, evaluated, you name it. The government knows who the morons are out there. Why can't we offer people money to not breed, at least in the short term? This isn't sterilization, it's not permanent, and it's not eugenics. Can't we simply pay the least capable would-be-parents to at least hold off until they are a little more mature? Can't we put off the production of some stupid babies for a little while? At least in the woman's case, we narrow the window of fecundity a bit. She may still end up with eight kids, but she'll have a hard time making it to twelve if she waives five of her childbearing years.

The savings would become evident very quickly. I am not criticizing people without health insurance, as I frequently fall into this group. But it isn't people who work for Fortune 500 companies who get knocked up without insurance, an income or some means of support.

Ten grand, tax free at the end of five years, just for not having kids. This is a good deal, for the stupid, and for America.

If anyone has any idea how the hell you start up a government pilot program, please leave a comment. And if you have any idea of how to write up the proposal without using the word "morons," that will help, too. Many thanks.

No ID Required

Once again, asshat fundies are in court to throw science under the bus.

A bus is a multi-passenger vehicle used to convey many people from place to place. It is powered by an internal combustion engine.

The internal combustion engine was created on Day 5, when God became tired of walking everywhere.

What the hell is wrong with America? So many curious people have invented so many important technologies over 200 years! This country has led the world in science for decades, and yet a majority still want Genesis taught as science? What is the matter with us?

"Not so fast, commie atheist scumbag. Creationism isn't where it's at. This is Intelligent Design. It's science!"

Yes. I like that. Intelligent Design. It still allows me to believe in fairy tales without feeling like such a moron. Come on.

A lot of people don't really understand what this is all about, and then there are others who slyly pretend not to know, in order to seem even-handed. Like the President of the United States, who has suggested that this garbage be taught alongside evolution, because "we have to teach both sides in science class, in order to be fair."

Horseshit.

I'll be honest, if you want to talk intelligent design in philosophy class, even in public schools, I'm fine with that. It's good for people to kick around possibilities and theories, and to ponder the nature of the universe. It's important. But not in science class. No. Absolutely not.

And this is where the ID proponents are so clever. I really have to hand it to them. They say things like:

"You are oppressing the debate, and free speech!"

Or

"What are you scared of, anyway?"

Or

"Well, if evolution is the answer, what about ____? YOU HAVEN'T ANSWERED EVERYTHING YET!"

And that's true. Science has not explained everything yet. For that reason, men and women work very hard, using scientific methods to unravel the mysteries that surround us. No, science has not explained everything yet.

But Intelligent Design has not explained anything yet. Nothing. Not one thing.

There are no scientists laboring to prove and explain who or what this intelligent designer is. We all know who they mean, anyway. There is not one shred of science involved with this sham.

ID proponents are very good at getting stupid people interested in this, and even some smart ones. It's effective, and it works most of the time, because people still like easy answers, especially in the United States. There is nothing that science can't make better and faster, except science. I'm sorry, Evolution is a very complicated thing, and I don't pretend to understand all of it. But what I have studied makes sense. It's entirely logical. And I don't think that evolution is something only for atheists. There is still no reason a supreme being couldn't have started the whole process without having to guide every tiny step along the way. It's ok.

This is a lengthy piece, but it really gets to the crux of the debate. There is no controversy about Intelligent Design. There is no science to Intelligent Design. Intelligent Design is Creationism in a lab coat.

Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)

Driving to work is it's usual frustrating experience, because due to overpopulation and the economic boom during the Clinton years, there are just too many cars out there. It's not an issue of having to share the road...Oh, of course it is. When they bring a matter transporter to market, I'm buying one. I hate commuting. It'd be so nice to walk to work, but we don't do that here, because employers never build their offices/workspaces in areas that their workers can afford to live.

So, I see a lot as I drive around, at least when my mind isn't clouded with rage. One recurring theme is Calvin (of the late, great Calvin & Hobbes comic strip) urinating on things. He pees on Ford. He pees on Chevy. I assume this is some sort of brand-loyalty NASCAR-related beef, but I don't really care enough to find out. Just the other day, I saw a Toyota with Calvin taking a whiz on a Honda logo. This person is just desperate to fit in. Calvin also pees on Osama bin Laden from time to time, and my guess is, there are local, state and regional instances of Calvin urinating on rival high schools, professional sports franchises, and perhaps even pissing on a urinalysis test, to show disdain for the war on drugs. I've not seen it, but that's only because irony is dead.

And I don't really care. I mean, if you're fired up enough about something to
have a cartoon character take a whiz on it, well, I'm sure glad I'm behind you instead of in front of you.

I also see a lot of Jesus fish on cars. Most of the time, they're doing 10 mph below the speed limit, but I still see them as I pass. These spawned the Darwin fish with legs, which was kind of an amusing take on it, yet still not inspiring enough for me to want one. Now what cracks me up, is turn-the-other-cheek so-called Christian types felt compelled to respond with the ever-larger Jesus fish with "TRUTH" on the side, eating the Darwin fish. I was not surprised when I saw these, given the insecure nature of Christians in general.

I will reiterate, this is an insecure religion. They recruit, because only in numbers do they feel that right is on their side. They shout down opposing viewpoints at every opportunity. It's not enough for you to believe in God, but you'd better buy into Jesus as well. I don't need any middlemen in my communion with the universe. But that's not where I wanted to go with this.

How come you see so many Jesus fish, and Jesus Loves You stickers and the like, but the magnetic ribbons all say "GOD bless the USA" or "our troops" or "President Bush?" Jesus is lord, but he is also God's son, so is it the same thing or isn't it? Doesn't this duality water down the message somewhat? I mean, which is it? God? Or Jesus? And why not Allah, Adonai, Vishnu or Buddah?

Anyway, I'm still in my car, where I often see Calvin kneeling reverently before a cross. Having read Calvin & Hobbes, I always found our hero to be more of a hedonist, but that's my take. Are the people with these stickers practitioners of Calvinism (the Christian sect)? Or is it that we'll just put any stupid thing we can find on our cars if we think it will ward off evil spirits and get people to think we're reverent? And what of Calvin's creator, Bill Watterson? Does he approve of Calvin urinating and genuflecting? And more importantly, is he getting a piece of the action?

I remember several years ago when these praying Calvin stickers started showing up, and a friend of mine asked me what I thought about them, seeing as how I have an opinion on EVERYTHING. Well, my initial response was, "I'll bet he didn't see that coming." I don't know why I said it, but he cracked up. It was my honest reaction though.

I don't have any bumper stickers on my car, and I'm not sure why. To me, using your car's bumper to tell the world how you feel is kind of sad. Did anyone change their vote after seeing a "W" or a "Kerry/Edwards" sticker last fall? Doubtful. And if not to influence others, why would you want anyone to know your political leanings while driving around? You don't need a sticker, your car tells me what I need to know.

For example:

You drive an extended cab pickup truck and live in the suburbs? You're a pussy-whipped shell of a man whose wife wouldn't let him get a real truck.

You own a two-wheel drive SUV? You're inconsiderate, and too full of yourself to buy what you need, a station wagon or a minivan.

You bought a Hummer? Sorry about your little dick, buddy. That's a shame. I mean really, maybe you can get chicks into the thing, but you're still bound to be a disappointment.

One day, I'll move to a city with a decent subway, and I'll sell my car. Then, I'll truly be free.

Go on, be a monkey's uncle

I threatened to talk about Evolution and Darwinism a little bit, so here it is.

The thing of it is, it simply makes sense. You can pretty much look back in the fossil record and see the progression and wrong turns that we made as humans. Admittedly, there are some missing pieces of the puzzle, but that's to be expected over millions of years. I don't understand why some people just dismiss it out of hand.

"I didn't come from no monkey! God made me!"

Well, God made monkeys too, presumably. Why is the notion of having kinship to other primates so repugnant to you? I mean, a chimpanzee's DNA differs from a man's by less than two percent? We can infer nothing from that? Besides, we all know people that look a little bit like monkeys. I am routinely pointed at by children who see the likeness. Sure, it hurts, but I'm comfortable with what I am.

So, why can't you admit it? You feel it insulting to be distant cousin to the banana-eating feces tosser? Sure, monkeys do some pretty funny stuff, but I'll bet you have human cousins that act more idiotic. Any DWIs in your family? Any of them get pregnant in high school? Perhaps some of them BLOG? See? You have a great deal to be ashamed of. A baboon never fucked his partner over in a business deal. An ape never locked his keys in the car. A gorilla never claimed Iraq was an imminent threat to the United States.

Humans can be pretty cool, but we're only at the top of the food chain because we know how to build guns. One on one, most animals would kick our asses. So we adapted. We learned. We EVOLVED. We lost some of our physical strengths, and became more clever than the other animals. To me, this is a source of pride, not shame. I mean, we have air conditioning and Neosporin and Red Bull now, so life is infinitely better than it was say, 200 years ago. Are we going to start denying that period of our development because they had to use candles and rode horses to get around? How embarrassing! Let's deny all of it! God made us perfect, finished and complete!

Do you feel like a finished product? I would prefer to keep growing, learning, and improving myself. Maybe there is a god, and maybe there isn't. That really should be irrelevant to the argument. If God exists, then why shouldn't man have started in the primordial soup? God is in a hurry? God can't wait? If a thousand years is but a day, then what's it to God to wait millions of years for us to develop into the fascinating creatures we have become? God couldn't stand being without people ruining His environment and masturbating to Internet porn? That strikes me as unlikely.

You're a smart monkey. Take pride in it. Frankly, it may be your only redeeming quality.

Look at me! I'm a corporate bigwig!

And as such, I'm now farming out work to other people.

You say you don't believe in Darwinism?
